Nah, I remember the internet of 20 years ago and there was noticeably less of a push to push political causes into otherwise-entertaining forums. Even 10 years ago there was a lot less. Not saying it was absolutely absent, either, but at least on the message boards I hung out on at the time, it was hardly a constant occurrence.
