I don't think the internet even existed yet, if not just being limited to a network between universities.
I don't doubt that the PATRIOT Act stirred up a lot of discussion. I remember taking a liking to Real Time w/ Bill Maher around that point when he would heckle the Bush administration and aimed to have a panel of left and right guests. Though I wasn't very familiar with Politically Incorrect and am not sure if that show already had the same regular reception as Real Time.
With The Daily Show I'd imagine them covering other news channels was somewhat business as usual, though I would eat it up every time Stuart went on a different program to gives his nuanced outlook on matters.

Even 9/11 changed outlooks quite a bit.
The whole political climate for the everyday citizen shifted drastically with Bush Jr. and 9/11. The divisions which had been growing became stark and pulled quite far apart.
That combined with the increasingly entertainment-driven nature of for-profit news and the 24-hour news channels have made it a constant topic.
Bush years was paradise compared to this. No what is gender discussion, no platforming wars like we have now, Spike lee and Clint Eastwood got inot it and the press took Clint's side, no maiunstream use Starigth White Male as an insult...

Not quite. When I say that everything looks good with nostalgia goggles, I don't mean literally everything, but more anything that happens to be the subject, namely something that is suspect of nostalgic fondness.

As an experience the politics of the 2000s are shit. In terms of upside today is way better but it feels way shittier.
