Zardoz

This forum is for discussing Chuck's videos as they are publicly released. And for bashing Neelix, but that's just repeating what I already said.

This was a few years ago now, but ''Janet Jackson's boob''. Trust me, we were sitting here in Europe thinking ''so?'' And then there is the fact that everyone's favourite supervillain Anita Sarkeesian comes from the US. Then there are the purity balls.
Yes, the US is diverse with different opinions, but it does not help that you keep having these high profile examples of puritanism.

You do realize that jokes frequently utilize exaggeration for effect, yes?

For what it's worth, this whole subject didn't even ping my radar while watching the vid.

Just kind of a recurring theme:
State: Gets out in front of the issue to insure no misunderstanding.
Result: Told don't need to go on so long about the obvious

State: Don't try to eliminate misunderstanding
Result: People jump to conclusions about what is really being said

It's like the circle of life for banging your head against the wall.

Heh. The US is a country of contrasts. Easily on par with some muslim countries, when it comes to issues of public nudity, but at the same time it sports the biggest porn industry in the world. A country constantly in the Top Ten of gun-deaths per capita, yet a hands-off approach to gun control. Houndreds of miles of straight roads out in nowhere, where nothing could conceivably come to harm when you drive fast other than yourself when you fall asleep from the boredom, yet speed limits in the 55 to 60 mph-range. And so on and on.

That is an amazingly astute observation. Also I now wonder, who is the user with the ID #1?

Truthfully the US is my fave country beyond my own. It is an interesting place because of its diversity and I have been a few times. Still scares me when I drive on the wrong side of the road though lol.

Radio warns of a ghost-driver and you are like: "One?! Houndreds!"

I just thought saying "so and so and I agree because we live on the same continent" was a bit silly. I've heard people talk about cultural norms in different cultures or countries before, but when you just say continent, my thought was "At that point, why not say we agree because of the same hemisphere, same planet, ect."

But whatever, I didn't expect my comment to derail this thread so thouroughly so I apologize.

This is pure win. :)

I think the abhorrence to nudity comes from the religious background of the original colonists which has kind of stuck around even after their specific version of it has gone away. This is added to by the Helen Lovejoy types who like to use children as shields for their own sensibilities. And the US is hardly alone in that, as only fairly recently, the country which sports a penis museum actually banned porn under the guise of "won't someone please think of the children!"

Personally, I'm all for freeing the nipple. ;) Because freedom, and totally no other reason.
