A couple of Voyager and Enterprise episodes have come close: you can tell at times that he was slogging through to the bitter end, but this was something else. I honestly wouldn't be surprised if he hadn't earned a few grey hairs over the course of the series, and I can certainly understand his concerns about possible legal troubles over some of the content.Draco Dracul wrote:I think the closest would be Howard the Duck and Transformers 2, though both were far milder and there was a sense that a lot of the disdain was more for the disservice they did the source material.Starbug wrote:I can't think of any other review where Chuck's displayed such utter disdain for the subject matter...and this is a man who's put together lists of the worst episodes from each Star Trek series.
I have often considered putting in for something bad, just to see him rip it apart, but even I draw the line somewhere (turned out to be at Starchaser: The Legend Of Orin)

The person who requested the series posted in the old forums - they requested the review specifically because it was so awful.TGLS wrote:I mean, why would any one have Chuck watch something truly horrible?

Oh wow. This show hit the bottom, kept digging, bored straight through the planet and out the others side, then dropped onto the planet directly below it and starting digging again - five times.
I probably shouldn't take so much amusement at seeing Chuck dealing with something that, for once, has no redeeming qualities whatsoever.
I think the next one will be hilarious, because I can imagine the sense of profound relief Chuck will feel, having gotten through this...!
(Okay, I suppose on a purely technical level, the animation is competant and I would not be surprised to find the music is passable, but I mean on a non-technical level really.)

The thing is... I'm really not finding these reviews entertaining anymore. That's not meant as a criticism of Chuck - it's just that we've hit something so terrible that savaging it is as much of a chore as watching it would be.
I've never understood the appeal of "hate watching" something; if you don't like something, then why even bother with it? Likewise, for SF Debris, I don't get the appeal of submitting something for the sole purpose of having Chuck savage it online. As a fan, I want to share things that I either love, or maybe something on which my opinion is the minority and that maybe someone can explain it better to me.
I'm watching the reviews because, well, I like Chuck and make an effort to watch every video he puts out (except B5, which I don't want to spoil myself on should it ever be available on Netflix or Prime). But I don't take any joy in watching the Kannzuki No Miko reviews, because what's the point in it?

KnM has a fanbase because anime has a long blogging history of fans willing to write insanely long, convoluted essays on why their anime is misunderstood. Now this is a bit hypocritical given that we are on a mainly Star Trek based fan review site that prides itself in its over-analysis but the anime blogging community is something else. Name any terrible anime and you'll probably find some over prosaic wordpress post defending it.

To each his own. One of the draws to reading/watching reviews is the chance to see something terrible get utterly savaged (and I don't think I'm alone on this; after all, Ebert titled his book "Your Movie Sucks"). This series right here sure hasn't disappointed in that regard.Independent George wrote:The thing is... I'm really not finding these reviews entertaining anymore. B5 is available on go90 for free right now:I'm watching the reviews because, well, I like Chuck and make an effort to watch every video he puts out (except B5, which I don't want to spoil myself on should it ever be available on Netflix or Prime).

I think its the manner of the beast. A bad film, or a bad episode of an otherwise good, or even up-and-down TV show, is isolated. It exists in a vacuum, and is over rather quickly. KnM however, doesn't really move. It parks right on top of the crap and doubles down on it. I mean, Chuck got all the good jokes out of the series already. But they aren't really giving him new material to work with because it's spinning it's wheels. And the series is like that, too, once Chikane-rape happens, it's just a blurry slog to the climax.Independent George wrote:The thing is... I'm really not finding these reviews entertaining anymore. It's also, due to the nature of the work as anime, hard for Chuck to fall back on the usual life preservers, "Oh the acting is good...too bad the script is shit!" or "the SFX guys really put in overtime to try and save this mess". And Chuck can get mad at incompetence and make it funny, but it's obvious here that they knew EXACTLY what they were doing, but the values dissonance kicks in overdrive.
Though personally I feel there's a missed opportunity to blend the missteps here with Paranoia Agent, "Don't mind the problems if you can wring a positive spin out of it".

That sentence just blew my mind.SuccubusYuri wrote:I personally don't despise the series, but mostly out of "historical context". This became the point-series for yuri as a genre because....everything else was so bad.
Considering the whole sexual assault thing, if that is the best Yuri anime had for a while, I gotta ask how offensive was the rest? Are we talking Nazi porn here or something? Actual Snuff film?
Like, how shit does a genre have to be where the "I rape for love" plot is is the good one

Other stuff wasn't really more offensive, just either more Trashy or playing it too safe with the plausible deniability. This alone put on a pretense of being Artistic.
A lot of it has sexual assault in a more casual ignorant sort of way, same as often exists in Het romance novels.

Considering how much rape and sexual assault there tends to be in anime, I'm actually not surprised that there are anime fans who don't even bother to mention it in their reviews. It reminds me of what Chuck brought up about Gurren Lagann and how all the anime fans noticed the weird visual style and direction of one episode, but not the beach/spa episode, because the beach/spa episode is so common in anime series.
