No. This is "COPS are privileged in our society"...which they undeniably are, at least when it comes to the justice system. Prosecutors almost never attempt to bring cops to justice, and even when they do, juries almost never convict them. Let's hope this trial is the exception to the rule.

Yep, this is exactly what I was getting at. I really, really doubt that if anyone other than a cop had done this that this would be anything other than an open-and-shut case. Yes, maybe it was a mistake, brought on my exhaustion and distraction, but most people who make the kind of mistake that involves them shooting someone in their own home are still generally expected to pay for it with their freedom.

First to the thread question. No, I never heard of this case before this thread.

Now to AdmiralX, alternate possibility. Because this sounds like the officer is guilty and I see nothing about how long this case has been going on. Could it be just a normal case. But we are hearing about it because a police officer was involved and thus it is juicier to the media?

Eh, "person claims self-defense after breaking into someone's apartment and shooting them" is a pretty juicy story no matter who does it. The fact that she's police was just the cherry on top.

During a session, outside of the presence of the jury, defense attorneys and prosecutors argued over the language of the instructions the judge with provide to jurors. It was during this session that Judge Tammy Kemp ruled the jury can consider the Castle Doctrine during deliberations.

Jesus Christ. Walking into someone else apartment and shooting them to death can fall under the Castle Doctrine?!? That's....wow.

I mean, Tammy Kemp presumably knows the law better than I do, but I have to wonder where she's getting this from.

The argument, if I understand it, is the Castle Doctrine can be applied in this case, if the defendant was mistaken and thought it was her house. Whether or not she was mistaken is left to the jury to decide based on the facts of the case.
