Star Trek AUs

Post by Arkle »

So I was just hanging out at my Mom and Step-Dad's place today, and something I'd been thinking about for awhile came up. You all those fics that take Star Trek chaarcters and port them into diferent settings? You know, detective AUs, coffee shop AUs, high school, etc.?

Well, I wonder about doing the opposite; porting characters from anotehr franchise into Star trek. A Star Trek AU. ;)

The one we were able to mostly work out? The Mass Effect Trilogy.

Here's what we came up with (agreeing part way through to stick with species that'd been on the show, so no Hermats or Brikar);

Setting: Post-DS9.
  • Shepard, Vega, Ashley, Jacob, Kasumi, Zaeed, and Miranda would be all kept human. Shep would be captain of course. Miranda would be ex-Section 31 who brought an experimental AI named EDI with her. Zaeed would be ex-Maquis, and Kasumi would still be a thief, but one who had worked for the Orion Syndicate.

Garrus would be Andorian, Liara a Betazed, Wrex an addiction free Jem'Hadar (borrowing an idea from the DS9 Season 8 novels; similarly Jack would be a Vorta who had the telekinetic abilities we only ever saw once on the show), and Tali would be a Romulan. Specifically, the granddaughter of a Romulan ex-pat who lived in a colony of Romulan ex-pats that isn't A canon, but was mentioned in the New Frontier novels. Joker would be Elaysian (http://memory-alpha.wikia.com/wiki/Elaysian).

Grunt would be a young, brash Klingon, Legion would be a robot of some kind (we had trouble with him more than pretty much anyone), Mordin an atypical Ferengi, more interested in science than profit, and Samara a Trill.

And finally, Javik would be an Iconian. :) Okay, they were only MENTIONED on the show, but screw it, I'm counting it anyway.
We didn't really come up with any story ideas for it, but we agreed that of course the Starfleet ship would be "frigate sized" and called the Normandy. ;)

Feel free to share any ideas of your own; your own ME idea, Babylon 5, Dragon Age, BSG, Escaflowne, whatever.

The important thing here is to have fun with it, and don't be a dick to anyone over their ideas.

I didn't do very much work on it but I had an idea for a fic putting characters from the Marvel Cinematic Universe into Star Trek and giving them the same plot as Voyager. (It was kind of awkward to realize the cast became like 90% more white and male than the Voyager cast when you do that ...) I don't remember much in the way of specifics but I remember I was going to have the Asgardians be treated as essentially just a very strong, long-lived race and Q especially enjoyed fucking with Loki's head. Steve Rogers was from Kahn's generation of supermen but had turned against the other supermen and been frozen because of schenanigans and was only recently unthawed. Tony Stark was maquis, Phil Coulson (who is half-Vulcan) was undercover in his group. The Bajoran verison of Bruce Banner (I forgot what Bajoran sounding name I made up for him) was experimented on by Cardassians. That's about all I remember ... it came from a phase where literally everything I was writing was an Avengers crossover.

You mean holodeck stories? ;)

Don't know enough about Mass Effect to say very much, although it sounds good enough on the face of it.

Game of Thrones:

Takes place post-Nemesis.

Westeros=Klingons. Robert's (name to be Klingonified) Rebellion was the overthrow of a mad chancellor who succeeded Martok. Daenarys is his daughter who fled to the Federation (=Free Cities).

The Unsullied are replaced with the Jem-Hadar.

The White Walkers are extra-dimensional invaders.

Dragons=long lost fleet of super-powerful warships.

Okay, this one is a hard fit, but I'm almost tempted to try it for that reason.

I like the matchmaking for Mass Effect - the only alternative I'd suggest would be to have Samara also a Betazoid, so she and Liara have a shared culture (because even though they never really interacted, I wish they had, it would've been fascinating). And given the flippant superpower-level telepathy Lwaxana used to throw around when she felt like it, it'd be fascinating to see what'd amount to a Betazoid cop, and how she'd operate. Borg for Legion? Maybe afflicted by the same kind of 'multiple assimilated memories' condition as Seven got that one time, but it happened to go differently, and 'they' ended up with a stable internal consensus.

To the surprise of precisely nobody I'm starting with Willow Rosenberg as Captain (although she's only a Commander in rank, she's 'captain' in the sense that she's the ship's c/o; I like the notion that aboard a ship "captain" refers only and always to the person in charge of the ship, to avoid the least possibility of confusion in a crisis - I know they used to have other captains visit and never bothered referring to them as 'commodore' as a courtesy while aboard someone else's ship, just... never mind, I like the idea) of a Nova-class science ship shortly after the Dominion War - we can say it's a 'Nova refit' to tart it up a bit, I like the design but it could use a couple of tweaks if it's going to be our hero ship for seven years. She used to be a science officer (and happened to be stationed mostly away from the war), this is her first command, and we meet her and USS Palomino (the show's not called 'Palomino', we'll figure something out) upon its launch as the first Starfleet ship to come off the line of Bajor's at-last rebuilt shipyards (because you always start a show with a cameo from someone from a previous show, and I want to see Colonel Kira again, call Marvel and borrow their Young Michael Douglas CGI setup to make her look like she finished DS9 not too long ago). Tara is her ops officer (if Picard can duet the night away with Wendy Hughes, obviously this sort of thing's not forbidden), and I actually went with original characters from there on (sorry, rest of the BtVS cast), so you've got your J'naii first officer who sought asylum and joined Starfleet, your Vulcan science officer who thinks emotions are really interesting and useful for non-Vulcans rather than a drawback, your war veteran tactical officer who's caught between wanting to go back to how 'tactical officer' was before the war and not being sure she can be that person anymore, the Bynar chief engineer who's bonded with the ship's computer, the holographic Nurse, because it's a small ship and if there's not a crisis the rest of the medical-qualified staff are busy doing science (and unlike the Doctor she's not an accident), and the helmswoman is a chance to invent a new species, she likes stunt-flying the Waverider shuttle. It's not the fate of the galaxy, just the fate of this little ship and her crew, exploring a new sector and running into weird space clouds and Breen stragglers and the Ferengi Charitable Association (just so I can hear "Brunt, FCA" one more time) and who knows what. I never got around to writing more than a one-off, but I had it all figured out...

Idea! (Actually two, but one serious.)

In 2380 a Federation archaeology team studying Iconian ruins on Cheyenne IV are attacked by Hirogen who appear out of nowhere, steal several artefacts, and vanish into thin air. Daneel Jackson, an outspoken critic of Prime Directive non-interference who is nonetheless an expert on the Iconian language, determines that the Hirogen targeted writings concerning the Iconian gate technology. Admiral Janeway brings Zamantha Karta, a brilliant Cardassian scientist and engineer who figures out how to stabilise the remnant of the Iconian gate's exit and use it to follow it back to its source in the Delta Quadrant, led by Angosian supersoldier Jak Onil. There the Vaadwaur, using partially reconstructed Iconian technology, and conquering a vast swathe of the quadrant, having taken the failing Hirogen society under their wing and using them to hunt any trace of Iconian civilisation across the galaxy that might allow them to complete their gates and be able to teleport anywhere; the team are saved by Teelk, a Hirogen alpha whose exposure to Federation ideals he learned from opponents he hunted during his species' Hologram War, leads him to reject his Vaadwaur masters and join 'Starfleet-1'.

And there's also Wal-Tar, the Bolian who programs in the Iconian glyphs to make the Cheyenne exit point redirect to other Delta Quadrant worlds. His job's very important.

And the other idea is an AU in which Dexter Remmick discovers and defeats the parasites, instead of being taken over by their queen, which comes about after - due to being simultaneously a brilliant investigator and an officious, annoying prick who can never 'switch off' - he's reassigned out of everyone's way to the vacant position of security chief on USS Sandford, where ever since they did a survey of some unremarkable lower life forms on a remote planet there've been no security incidents to report, but a surprising number of 'accidents'...

This is kinda like a fanfiction i thought about writing. I was babysitting my nephew one night, we watched Aladdin and Mulan then we got half way through Beauty and The Beast when he fell asleep. I put him to bed and watched some DS9, and something clicked.

Four young graduates of the Starfleet academy are assigned as the crew of a new ship, one based more on Marquis interceptors rather then Federation starships. It is a smaller version of the Defiant, a runabout with enhanced shields and weapons. They are assigned to Deep Space 9 in the months leading up to the outbreak of the Dominion War.

The Commander is Mulan Fa, she comes from a long line of officers, stretching back into pre-Federation Earth. Her father was killed at Wolf-359 and she joined Starfleet wanting to take his place. Her training focused on combat and tactical operations. Most agree she is an excellent officer but she can be frustrated by the fact that her crew are not career officers.

Belle is the technician. She is the daughter of an engineer on a small Federation colony. He taught all he knew about machinery and technology. At the academy she excelled at her technical classes, astonishing many of her instructors. She joined starfleet wanting to see the galaxy but never thought that she would be in the middle of a real war.

Jasmine is the tactical officer. She is the daughter of the monarch of a small empire in the Alpha Quandrant, Agras, is not part of the Federation but has generally been on good terms with them. She ran away and joined Starfleet to avoid an arranged marriage, she thinks her father is still looking for her but in reality knows exactly where she is and secretly keeping up on her to make sure she is safe.

I thought about having Ariel as the pilot and the added issue of raising her daughter Melody but i was not sure how well it would fit. The story is about young people going to war for the first time so how does she have a 12 year old daughter?

You could have Melody be a baby or you could have Melody be her sister that she's having to raise instead of her biological daughter (that's how some mundane AUs handle Ezri and Jadzia).
