Looking at the remaining episodes, yeah, none really stand out as flat out terrible like some of the others Chuck already covered. I actually happen to like 11001001, not for any story reasons though, it just has some elements I like such as the Bynars, Minuet, the Picard/Riker dynamic that didn't really pan out in later seasons.
Symbiosis feels very dated in a 1980s PSA way, but I actually like the ending being grim, which was very unusual for the first season.
PICARD: Mister La Forge, take us out of orbit.
LAFORGE: Destination, sir?
PICARD: I don't care. Let's just get some distance between us and this system.

you have to wonder if geordi asked for a promotion to chief because he knew those helm consoles were faulty and could blow up in his face.

Pre-warp civilization could really mean before subspace technologies or moving up to a new tier of technology, like antimater, that represent a large capability to pose a threat to themselves and others. Kaltuu Barada Nikto and all of that.chaos42 wrote: ↑Wed May 27, 2020 6:04 pmits probably just a question of what they have, an old novel actually called prime directive, had kirk and co. dealing with a race that while they didn't have warp did have large deposits of rubindium crystals which could be used to create faster than light subspace coms.Riedquat wrote: ↑Wed May 27, 2020 10:28 amOnce a culture has warp it's definitely going to run into other civilisations sooner or later, so there's little point in trying to avoid contact then. as for the pre warp i think that it needs to be called something other than pre warp because with all the alien races that have contact it has to be something other than getting to warp thats the issue because you need stuff to make warp drive a possibility and the issue i think some cultures might not be able to without help, it could also be that they developed interstellar communication thats the thing, they may not have warp but they found life is out there, i just think warp seems to be more arbitrary since that episode was aired
Either way i think the warp drive being the deciding factor is over simplification. Plus races like the Bakku-i hate those guys- didn't use it even though they knew how to build one.
The problem i find is that once you get into warp your also dealing with antimatter as there seem to be only 2 technological ways to power a warp drive we know of not counting borg or other stuff its either you build an antimatter reactor or a artifical black hole to power it either way its something extremely dangerous
That aside im thinking that the paris episode is one hes going to save and use the time skipping in that episode to explain the fact he keeps feeling like he already finished season one but there is always more.

you have a valid point and it is probably how it should be written that a certain standard in some way shape or form is needed so that they can engage with other cultures though i just though of something, the ferengi didn't invent warp drive they bought warp tech from another species and lets face it the pacleds we have seen probably don't know how to create a warp drive, though its possible there are more intelligent members of their race im unsure if they figured out warp drive for themselvesRobovski wrote: ↑Fri May 29, 2020 2:41 amPre-warp civilization could really mean before subspace technologies or moving up to a new tier of technology, like antimater, that represent a large capability to pose a threat to themselves and others. Re: The Last of TNG SEASON 1 which is the worse
I hope Chuck does cover more season 1 episodes...but it makes me feel bad for enjoying his suffering when I know he doesn't deserve it. Speaking of terrible TNG season 1, was Code of Honor ever pulled from airing in certain areas? I mean, just look at that racist piece of shit episode, how the hell could they not get complaints about it? They removed The High Ground from airing in the UK due to the IRA stuff happening at the time, so surly something similar happened with Code of Honor somewhere. Most of you are more knowledgeable about Trek than I, that's why I'm asking.
Honestly season 1 TNG is so awful I'm sure that if it hadn't been for the Star Trek brand name attached to it, that show wouldn't have made it past season 1, possibly not even halfway through.

Your not wrong. Although if it wasn't attach to Star trek someone else could take over
Re: The Last of TNG SEASON 1 which is the worse
i was a kid when it aired so i didn't understand how bad it was, i enjoyed it at the time so i do feel weird about it now. but the rest of tng has some good stuff so we take the good with the bad. that aside though code of honor as far as i know never got pulled from syndication in the south east usa were i live as ive seen it on rerun here.
Still of the remaining 7 i wonder which is next, i can imagine getting a fair bit of mielage out of 11001001 as it has wes being a twit and star fleet security being terrible, plus riker in love with a hologram.

I know what you mean, but I hope he doesn't suffer from reviewing bad stuff but has fun ripping it up instead. Although there's definitely been some material I gather he really wished he hadn't seen and wouldn't want to see again even to eviscerate (Kannazuki No Miko and Repo spring to mind).ChrisTheLovableJerk wrote: ↑Mon Jun 01, 2020 2:40 am I hope Chuck does cover more season 1 episodes...but it makes me feel bad for enjoying his suffering when I know he doesn't deserve it. Re: The Last of TNG SEASON 1 which is the worse
The worst is "Too Short a Season" - it's just bad in every way. "Symbiosis" is a very special runner-up. There's not much left in here that's unambiguously good, but "11001001" is my pick for best, followed by "Coming of Age" (yes, really)
Because there's not much TNG left, it is interesting to look ahead and guess what might be the very last review. IMO "The Big Goodbye" would be a great episode for the Next Gen reviews to end on. Not too horrible, but also fairly riffable as it's not the greatest ever episode. It was memorable and well-put together - the costumes won an 1988 Emmy. And of course, the title is a perfect fit.
"Home Soil" is fairly bad, but it did gift us with "ugly bags of mostly water", some interesting points about exponential growth and neural models, and the God Complex that terraformers seem to get; you get some snippets of this when they try to pitch Picard managing New Atlantis in "Family" - and then there's Gideon Seyetik in DS9 "Second Sight", which is a whole other level.
The stretches where Chuck picks a theme for several episodes in a row have always been fun ; "let's just get Season 1 over with" would be an interesting theme, but then again so would "let's do the rest of the Holodeck episodes" -- of which this stretch of Season 1 seems to have two or three.

Aye, "11001001" is a classic. Maybe not as much for the plot itself, but the atmosphere and worldbuilding was amazing. Starbases! Parrises Squares! Minuet!
"We'll Always Have Paris" does feel like half an episode, to be sure. All the parts I remember about that episode are in the Holodeck - at least the show's writers were still making a serious effort to convince us that the character was French.GreyICE wrote: ↑Tue May 26, 2020 4:17 pm...
We'll Always Have Paris is probably the best, not a stunning recommendation, but it apparently had an incomplete script, so it's kind of a miracle it was any good at all?
...
I nominate Home Soil as the worst on that list for blatantly stealing a TOS episode. Devil in the Dark was better in every way ...

once he finishes tng off he can do an overall score and count up the awards he did. and i do think a Get season one over with marathon would be interesting to see, plus its not like they are all absolute dreadful, just mostly dreadful
also i transposed a letter i was writing mileage, i was tired.
