Honestly, I think this is because the people going to the movies are not the type of people who buy merch or books. The movies were made to appeal to the casual popcorn flick-viewing audience and accomplished that quite handily. Buying plastic shit and reading books about it has always been the domain of the, shall we say, more dedicated fan base. The casual popcorn flick crowd is not going to be buying that stuff, and since the Trek fanbase is pretty fractured, there just aren't enough people who are going to buy that stuff compared even to those who buy the other stuff.

Personally, I'd have a hard time investing myself in a Kelvinverse Treklit universe. It would naturally lend itself to authors falling into the same old tie-in fiction trap of tying everything together and shrinking the universe as opposed to creating new adventures. We'd have to see what every character's Kelvin timeline version looked like, which would basically turn into a series of Alternate Universe novels.
The characters in the film have basically gone on a three film journey toward becoming the characters we already know. There's a few differences, but what would the point really be of going with the Kelvin universe rather than prime?
They did not sell books because they decided to not write them.
There were actually four tie-in novels already written by top Trek authors, but the books ended up being canceled. There has been smatterings of Kelvin timeline merchandise, but not much. There are some comics, of course.
The point is that they don't publish Kelvin tie-in books because they wouldn't sell if they did.

Yeah I agree. After Trek '09 friends or acquaintances who wouldn't touch a Trek series with a ten foot pole would say how awesome the new Trek movie was, but after the fact I doubt any of them gave it a second thought. The diminishing box office returns suggest to me that a lot of people who liked the first or second one didn't even care to show up for the sequel.

The authors like Christopher Bennett and Greg Cox have talked about it over on trekbbs, although I haven't seen a solid explanation as to why they weren't released. Some of the written material ended up appearing in prime universe novels (in altered form, of course) later on.
There's also four "Starfleet Academy" Kelvinverse novels, released between Trek '09 and Into Darkness. I don't know much about them, but they appear to be very slight works (for teenagers) and pretty far removed from typical litverse works.
