My grandfather was a drill instructor for a few years and he told me that nine tenths of boot camp is mental not physical, its about getting a guy into the right mind set so it makes sense if people are supposed to be training for combat.

Still, i am surprised no one has mentioned Toph in Avatar considering she, you know, rolled a giant rock down a hill and expected Aang to stop it or get crushed.

Yeah. I generally like that character, but I hated Bitter Work, and a friend showing it as my introduction to Toph put me off the series for a long time. You'd think she could at least start by flinging pebbles at him or something before he'd even shown level-one earthbending abilities. Come to think of it, if that backfired it could have easily sent him into an uncontrolled Avatar State.
