DIS - Perpetual Infinity

This forum is for discussing Chuck's videos as they are publicly released. And for bashing Neelix, but that's just repeating what I already said.

My inclination is that Kurtzman never really liked inheriting the TOS modernized STAR TREK: DISCOVERY. He's apparently the only actual Trekkie in the original writers' room of JJ Abrams for the Kelvinverse and was always unhappy with the fact that the Kelvinverse was based on Kirk and Spock. I believe that once he inherited the Discovery, he was always planning to get it out of the present era.

All of the SECTION 31, Red Angel, and time travel stuff is essentially there to set up making the adventures of the Discovery classified so no one can ever talk about it ever. Also, to justify the move to 1000 years in the future.

FYI - While Kurtzman denies it, a lot of the stuff in the show seems to come from the novels. Which is actually part of why I like it. One of the longest multi-book stories was dealing with CONTROL, the secret master of Section 31.

So do they explain in the show why Control wants to go full Skynet or is it just that old trope of AI are automatically evil unless they aren't?

I don't think Kurtzman is a Trekkie at all. He is, from EVERYTHING of his that I've seen, and I did my due diligence and watched his entire filmography to make sure, an illiterate hack who knows nothing beyond the most rote and oversimplified genre tropes. He draws from David Mack's crappy novels because he doesn't have the intellectual capability or even the brainpower to not rip off somebody else's work.

(God, I hate Mack's Section 31 novels and Mack's Jack Bauer fetish so much, too)

I think it's because CONTROL was created by a bunch of sociopaths to be their weapon to begin with. Mind you, I think they've hinted that CONTROL survives in Discovery and eventually evolves into Calypso. Which means that he really just needed Funny Face and an acknowledgement of their feminine side.

I strongly recommend watching his panel on DISCO 3. You can tell how much of a nice guy he is and how much fun everyone is having on the set.

I did, actually. I saw a dimwitted hack massaging his own ego and a bunch of actors doing their jobs and supporting the product at the press junket. None of them seem to be truly enjoying themselves, and while I'm sure that Kurtzman is a kind enough person in his own way, that doesn't change the fact that he's an illiterate hack.

It's something I've said before but...I am so tired of Section 31. Give Starfleet Intelligence an actual showing when you need a damn spy. They're an actual part of Starfleet, not a terrorist cell.

Yeah, that is completely different from the impression I've gotten. Everything about DISCOVERY and the Kurtzmen series have been showing high morale, that he's a good boss, and people genuinely having fun with both their creation as well as the work involved.

I suppose that the fact I like Kurtzman's Trek biases me though so I'll just stop talking about it.

I'm probably biased too, but STD is a bog-standard Kurtzman production. A dumb plot about saving TEH ENTIAR UNIVERS!!!!! that glorifies nationalism, violence, and dumb thuggery while cardboard cutout characters claim to have deep connections to people they just met and there's a last minute "but peace is actually good, y'all!" message. Most of the cast either phoning it in or clearly desperate to matter, because the writing sucks.

I will say this--I have never heard about Kurtzman being an abusive or nasty boss. All I have seen of him is a complete imbecile who is outwardly kind to people despite being a total moron who can barely blow his nose without fatally injuring himself.

Chuck's actual video

I think there's actually a big sign that DISCO is getting better by this video. The thing that has been lacking from Chuck's reviews of DISCOVERY is the humor. As he stated in a previous one, he doesn't CARE about Michael and his reviews tend to be bored, aggravated, and irritated. Comedy is actually a chore it
seems.

However, this episode has him creating the first Running Gag of DISCO with "everyone hates Ash Tyler" and also seemingly caring about how crappily Burnham's mother treats her.

If he can care about the characters enough to make parody then it's a sign things are looking up.

We even got a reappearance of his once-a-half-season insistence that Lorca will come back
