And that is exactly how you modernize the distinct TOS-style into a 21st century show. And instantly I am willing to give the show the benefit of the doubt. It's almost as giving a damn to what was before is helping old fans of the franchise to accept and welcome it as part of the franchise... Wierd how that works, eh?CharlesPhipps wrote: ↑Tue Sep 14, 2021 9:40 pmI really like what they did in Season 2.Thebestoftherest wrote: ↑Tue Sep 14, 2021 8:29 pm Personally they should have keep the color schemes and styles but change what the sets are made from
I mean, I still find it kind of superfluous, as it seems to be exploring what was explored before, but I am actually vaguely interested in it now.

Eh, you're damned if you do and you're damned if you don't. DISCOVERY tried to bait the hook with Spock's sister and the Klingon War (which has always been something fans have wanted to see) plus the topical War on Terror stuff (except maybe 15 years too late).
However, prequels are inherently contentious. If you mess with obsessive fans sense of continuity then they revolt.
I think they actually worked to repair a lot of the fan criticisms but you only get one chance to make a first impression.

I like the trailer for the cast too.
Not many times you hire an actual blind actor to play a blind Aenar.

I'm living in Germany. I am not allowed to see any Paramount+ content, because... reasons.

Well you could always sail the seven seas...
...to somewhere with Paramount+. What else could I have meant?
More seriously, Discovery's on Netflix and Picard and Lower Decks are on Amazon Prime, internationally (except Lower Decks in Latin America), and Paramount+ is launching in some European countries in 2022. Whether or not SNW will end up there or will be carved out piecemeal is beyond me.

I'd have to say that there are a heck of a lot of gradients for people to believe between these two extremes.CharlesPhipps wrote: ↑Tue Sep 14, 2021 7:55 pm
I suppose it depends whether you see today's progressives as people who are being attacked by racists and misogynists who are engaged in a culture war that wants to destroy all progress over the past 50 years or whether you see them as snowflakes attacking people over nothing.
Because if you have an answer to the above, it's very likely you're having a different argument than the other side.

At least in this shot, this is exactly what I was talking about when I referred to updating an aesthetic based on what real world technology makes possible, while still maintaining the sense that what's changed is the real world technology rather than a revision of what the in-universe technology is supposed to be.CharlesPhipps wrote: ↑Tue Sep 14, 2021 9:40 pmI really like what they did in Season 2.Thebestoftherest wrote: ↑Tue Sep 14, 2021 8:29 pm Personally they should have keep the color schemes and styles but change what the sets are made from
The problem for me with Discovery is that you still have the Discovery alongside this version of the Enterprise and the result is that Discovery seems clearly to be of a totally different era.

I think that more often than not this kind of attitude (that the badness of those you're opposing justifies your own behavior) is one of the things that throughout history has lead to a lot of nasty stuff, but in particular it seems to me to be (increasingly) a particular weakness of our time. We (on all sides) get so upset at what people we disagree with are doing or saying or believing that we get so emotional as to sort-of short circuit that part of our brains which helps us make sure our own behavior is good.Madner Kami wrote: ↑Tue Sep 14, 2021 8:33 pmCan't they be both? I mean, not necessarily in equal amounts, but just because you are fighting against jerks doesn't mean, that you can't be a jerk yourself.CharlesPhipps wrote: ↑Tue Sep 14, 2021 7:55 pmI suppose it depends whether you see today's progressives as people who are being attacked by racists and misogynists who are engaged in a culture war that wants to destroy all progress over the past 50 years or whether you see them as snowflakes attacking people over nothing.

I definitely wish the JJ Abrams film looked more like that. Even though the exterior of the JJprise looks similar enough, the interior never matched what TOS looked like.CharlesPhipps wrote: ↑Tue Sep 14, 2021 9:40 pmI really like what they did in Season 2.Thebestoftherest wrote: ↑Tue Sep 14, 2021 8:29 pm Personally they should have keep the color schemes and styles but change what the sets are made from
