Zardoz

This forum is for discussing Chuck's videos as they are publicly released. And for bashing Neelix, but that's just repeating what I already said.

I've heard people talk about cultural norms in different cultures or countries before, but when you just say continent, my thought was "At that point, why not say we agree because of the same hemisphere, same planet, ect."

But whatever, I didn't expect my comment to derail this thread so thouroughly so I apologize.
I got the impression that folks weren't strenuously arguing against you, just poking fun. At least, that's what I was doing (but humor doesn't travel through the internet very well).

Also, given the confusing mess that is Zardoz, I'm not sure you were derailing the thread.

Personally, I'm all for freeing the nipple. ;) Because freedom, and totally no other reason.
Maybe I'm just being American, but I'd much rather we put the male nipple back in its chains. I mean seriously, eww.

Will our society have just a bunch of blithering old people and listless young people no longer being able to see any point in anything because all the fulfilling work is done by computers?
We live there now! Old men well into their 70s and 80s continue to hold on to the reins of power and wealth when in earlier generations most of them would have died, retired, or passed into dotage, but their lead-poisoned brains are unable to act with empathy or real forethought while they pull up the ladders that allowed them to ascend to where they are. Let the world burn while they enjoy their remaining years in the comfort of their overseas tax shelters guarded by private military contractors.

Both physical and intellectual labour are being slowly replaced with automation and the jobs that remain in both arenas are increasingly demanding of time and energy and psyche, stressful, and offer little long-term respite or succor. Younger generations see elders unconcerned with the steady disintegration of the ecosphere and with it, civilization, and thus increasingly seek what momentary pleasures they can between precarious jobs with no prospects and long-term bouts of ennui, depression, angst, or darker states.

So is immortality really a Space Whale Aesop? Or is it just a metaphor for our imminently arriving future: cities full of old people, afraid of the sky?

If people weren't arguing about geography, they'd be thinking about Zardoz. I think the geography thing is better for everyone involved.

All seriousness though, the strange difference in our culture between male and female nipples is one of those mysteries of life. Every culture throughout history has had a different view on it.

You mean like this right? Those do have their uses.

Was going to shown them worn, but figured someone would be bothered. It is hard for me to imagine an issue with male nipples. In most cases there is hardly any 'there' there to begin with, even if not pedantically contrasting between nipple and areola. There are those people who think if female nipples can't be free then male nipples should have to be covered, but that seems a bit silly. I come down on the let the nipple be free side, even though as a gay guy it doesn't matter to me from a titillation standpoint. In practice, it isn't likely many women would go out in public topless, considering how often I hear women complaining about feeling that men are staring at their bodies in public as it is. Heck, I've noticed my eyes will track cleavage without my even being aware of it at first, and I have zero interest in breasts beyond appreciation for the human form in a nude sculpture or the like. Of course the nipple thing still isn't as strange as the internet age development that nudity automatically is seen as pornographic. Humans can be really weird about the human body.

I quite enjoyed the review, though I'd have preferred an NSFW version so I could see what he was talking about during the review. May have to background watch it just to appreciate it in all its glory/horror. Connery in that outfit is definitely more horror for me. He's a sexy man, but for me, not in that getup. Yeesh!

Heh. The US is a country of contrasts. Easily on par with some muslim countries, when it comes to issues of public nudity, but at the same time it sports the biggest porn industry in the world.
Basal America culture sees sex as a very private thing. Both those two issues show that.

Conversely violence is a very open, public act, especially when it comes to reacting to crime or settling a fight as one can see of the American love of the idealized "Militia" of mutually protective citizens defending one another against criminals rather than recoiling and allowing the police to handle it, and a good old fashion fight done in front of everyone so the victor and loser can been clearly seen.

The amusing thing for me is seeing the clearly Anglo-Saxon roots of their cultural, yet they are so worked up over Independence that they still try to act as if they're not just a chip off the old block of their mother country.
Admiral X wrote: Thu Mar 07, 2019 5:45 pm I think the abhorrence to nudity comes from the religious background of the original colonists which has kind of stuck around even after their specific version of it has gone away. This is added to by the Helen Lovejoy types who like to use children as shields for their own sensibilities. And the US is hardly alone in that, as only fairly recently, the country which sports a penis museum actually banned porn under the guise of "won't someone please think of the children!"

I think it goes back a lot father than that. The Saxons were amongst the Germanic tribes Tacitus noted for avoidance of premarital sex and preference for "late" marriages with both partners being in their mid to late 20s. Things which, Tactitus being Tacitus and his fondness for the Germans ways over his own people's, contrasted with the Roman love to expend their energies having sex as soon as possible.

Are you deliberately being ignorant or just being a dick? He is clearly talking about the foundation of your culture not what it is today.
