Considering how many guys saw Fight Club and came out idolizing Tyler Durden, it should not be at all surprising that people could misunderstand Fallout.

Yeah, when you look at the book it comes off as a really earnest military recruitment add at best or a Jingoist manifesto at its worst. Considering the book begins with the Mobile Infantry nuking a neutral powers water supply I think it's safe to say that Verhoeven made a valid argument for his Fascist interpretation of the Federation.

Then again Verhoeven is anti-fascist and he has good reason for that so it also shows in his vision of Starship Troopers compared to book that Heinleinin wrote during his fascist phase.

In more practical terms, this means that in the society of Starship Troopers a politician who wants to get into power (whatever their beliefs might be) will need to think about the well being of Citizens first and foremost if they want to get elected. Civilians are the keys to power, they need to be courted. Civilians are irrelevancies as far as the political process goes. You want to raise taxes to do something? Raise them on Civilians. They'll grumble but come election day that's all they can do.

It's also keen on brutal punishment. It's pro-death penalty, it's pro-corporal punishment.

just because you don't like the death penalty or canning's doesn't make the society fascist. Do you think Singapore is?
