Re: Birds of Prey Is Currently On Course For Worst DC Opening Weekend
As one of the few people who caught the movie on opening weekend, I think it is a shame that its not doing very well. I felt like it was a better action-comedy than most of the MCU films and definitely was better put together than Suicide Squad.
There is also a pretty great gag where all the "big important moment" bits from the trailer turn out to be either shit said while Harley was drunk to the point of being about to puke or turns out to be something kinda stupid in context.

One argument I saw on YouTube - which I do agree with - is that they also underestimated the amount if guys who go watch a film just to look at boobs and butts. And at Margot Robbie's puritan order to "limit the male gaze", Harley went from "crack-riding hot pants with more screen time than Cpt Boomerang" to "girl in modest clothes". It doesnt help that the rest of the women are hardly picking up the slack.
And in retrospect, this is possibly a large part of her breakout character status after the last film.

I think what the guy is trying to say there's little SJW agenda in the movie. It's in the perspective of a very naive Wonder Women who assumes the world is influenced by the god of war when she has no idea how complicated the world is outside her island. The scene in the war room where period politics talk is historically accurate.Rocketboy1313 wrote: ↑Tue Feb 11, 2020 2:03 amAre you fucking kidding me? It takes place during World War 1.McAvoy wrote: ↑Tue Feb 11, 2020 1:55 am Wonder Woman had little political agenda involved and was a fairly straight forward movie that just happened to have a female superhero lead. That and the movie was good. Of course the second movie will have a lot of interest in it. I question the use of Tiger Lady in it and not something more in line with Wonder Woman's powers.
There are discussions of Imperialism, there are scenes in which heads of state are just in a room talking about securing peace, There is a debate between the villain and Wonder Woman about whether humankind is redeemable and whether war is part of their nature.
The movie is about Wonder Woman, the avatar of the warrior woman who believes in the inherent goodness of mankind... PUNCHING WAR IN THE FACE.
At a point that isn't even symbolic anymore. They just are turning to the scene and saying what the movie is about.
And keep in mind I fucking hate that movie, but the idea that it is somehow devoid of politics is just asinine.

Exactly. Her solution to the war is find Ares and kill him. She has no idea what caused or led up to the war or what is keeping it going. Nope gotta kill the God of War. That will end it.excalibur wrote: ↑Thu Feb 13, 2020 1:19 amI think what the guy is trying to say there's little SJW agenda in the movie. The only thing I can think of anything being remotely SJW is the beginning with the Amazons, but honestly you have to really reach for that.
Captain Marvel to be sure isn't in your face about it but it does have SJW elements in it. Hell there is a deleted scene where she assaults a man for telling her to smile and then takes his ride. Rightfully deleted. It's not like Ghostbusters 2016...
I got nothing to say here.

It's more just about having women to play the masculine game as an action motif. SJW would be more about getting rid of the masculinity. I suppose that who they picked as a target is a bit SJW, but that's the most generic aspect of SJWism
A world on fire.
Re: Birds of Prey Is Currently On Course For Worst DC Opening Weekend
Agreed. If SJW was involved with Wonder Woman for example, Steve Trevor and his crew would be absolutely useless and constantly needed to be rescued.BridgeConsoleMasher wrote: ↑Thu Feb 13, 2020 3:54 amIt's more just about having women to play the masculine game as an action motif. I guess you could say a complete reversal of the hero and damsel in distress, but when you talk about equality, shouldn't you represent equality? Which is why Wonder Woman is a good movie. Wonder Woman herself doesn't really need saving herself and Trevor's crew was competent.
I got nothing to say here.

It's possible Harley Quinn's reception on the internet as we know it is overrepresentated among the general comic book movie goers. I think that could be considered ironic by many if true considering that the internet seems like a decent overall representation of comic book movie audiences specifically. For that matter, Harley Quinn and Suicide Squad might be no different from Joey and Friends.
That or it's the same case as Solo with concern to what people want in a *franchise* movie. Not technically bad in concept, but not set out to draw the right audiences with the kind of movie they're intending to make.

BoP:TFEoOHQ / aka HQ: BoP doesn't seem to have "legs" (women-focused movies often drop off more slowly at the box office). It's dropped rapidly at the box office, to where Bad Boys for Life is making about a third as much domestically, and that's been out since January 17.
I'd love to be a fly on the wall at Warner Bros. I'm curious as to what lessons they will get from this, if any.
